It is the metric equivalent of caliber - the diameter of the weapon's barrel measured in millimeters.

Well the problems lies in you not understanding English, not in my bad explanation. 😉
Because I had no sleep, I improved a picture of a gun barrel to give a simple visual overview.
The length of the red line in millimeters (mm) is what the original poster was asking about.

this ammmo is used only to pierce tanks but if you shot in a guy with that this will destroy the body completely;
The photo bellow, is a the damage done by a French Sniper in the enemy soldier, only 1 single shot!
