Can anyone explain how exactly the game mechanics work on clan rankings, control of location, clan experience? What all affect them and how much.

from what i understand it is based on total exp earned by clan members in that area durring a three hour period as to who controls the areas.

No, updates on the total clan XP updates every 3 hours - Each clan has some XP on each zone if they fought for clan XP there, just some more than others and only the top clan is credited with a bonus and ownership. - Also, the Clan xp for each zone dwindles 20% every 24 hours i think. (to allow a new leader to arise more easily).
*These statements are unconfirmed based on an OLD conversation with berserker, as I recall it*
